Animator, Good Animator, Design, Layout, Design Skills, Animation Techniques

Apart from acquiring expertise on software applications and technology, a good animator should possess certain other ingredients to stand apart. An animator should have knowledge of the following, which can be acquired through a formal training animation program from an institute of repute, while some of the skills can be imbibed from careful observation:Drawing Skills: Earlier animation was done purely on the basis of manual drawings. Various sketches of the same character are drawn that display different body movements, so that it gives an illusion of motion. Even now, these sketches are done on the computer through softwares like illustrator, photoshop or coral draw. Despite this, manual drawing is very important for an animator to understand and tell the story to the audience conveniently and realistically. Design & Layout: Designing of the set and layout, color combination, etc., are significant before creating animation. An aspirant should have thorough understanding of the history of art and design to create visually attractive animations. Observation of live characters: If you wish to create the expressions of facial and body movements of either a human being or any animal or bird, you should at first develop observe the real human or animal movements and expressions meticulously. To attain perfection of expressions, animators may also try to observe their own various facial expressions in front of the mirror and create the same through sketches. Animation Techniques: It is imperative for a student of animation to learn the various techniques of animation and acquire mastery over any of them. The various techniques and styles like stop-motion animation or claymation, cell or traditional animation, rotoscoping, cutout animation, graphic animation, 2D, 3D, Flash animation, etc. require expertise and hence, good training and practice is significant. A good animator must specialize on any one.Understanding Cartoons & Caricatures: An animator needs the ability to outline a character, human or animal in the form of a cartoon or caricature. He should be able to bring in the comic look of the character. A good animator can even make a ferocious animal or demon look cute in animated form. So, it is important to understand the comic nature of cartoons.Creating different moods and feelings in characters: Animated characters also need to tell the story through expressions and feelings just like live-action characters. To create the same, the animator need to closely observe live characters and also should have the sensitivity to feel and understand the character as per the story. Remember, it is the animator who infuses life into the character. The moods and feelings need to have a very realistic look so that the audience can relate to it.
